Maria Snigirevskaya has been brought in a unique artistic milieu – her mother is artist Natalia Zhilina, her friends are wonderful artists of the Leningrad underground: Richard Vasmi, Sholom Schwartz, Alexander Arefiev, Vladimir Shagin (father of the leader of the “Mit’ki” Group Dmitry Shagin). As long as Masha remembers herself, she always drew, and in 13 she was enchanted with the art of photo under the influence of her step-father Boris Smelov and his favorite photographers: Joseph Sudeck, Bill Brandt, Diana Arbus, Cartier-Bresson. A significant role in her creativity belongs to the acquintance with photos by Moscow masters Boris Saveliev and Elena Darikovich.
Nevertheless, not rejecting the role of her teachers and mentors, we can speak on Snigirevskaya as on individual and independent author with her own style and “hand”, with her own circle of themes and plots.
